Negative experience: I just received a phone call from an AI representative of Barfoot & Thompson wanting to know if I owned residential property in Whangarei. At first I felt a bit confused then concerned that it may be a scam. It was so unpleasant. Upon phoning the Whangarei office to check the woman did not seem to be at all concerned. She blithely informed me that they'd had so much positive feedback and booked a number of appraisals. In a more condescending tone she informed me that it was the way of the world. It is not the world I choose to inhabit and I'd like to see some valid statistics on how these calls were actually perceived. Our family have used B & T for decades. I doubt the founders would support this cunning move. We all have choices in the market place and our farm will not be sold with your outfit. A personally handwritten note in the letterbox expressing interest would capture my attention. Years ago a motivated, hard working agent surprised a group of neighbours with gift packages of tea and biscuits to enjoy while perusing the envelope of marketing material. She made genuine connections, earned respect and many sales. No lazy, dubious or deceptive methods were required.

Fantastic experience: I had been looking for a rental property for awhile. I would request a viewing, get an automated reply saying "We don't have specific viewing times set currently". The next correspondence I would receive was and email advising the property was rented, obviously to someone who could get a viewing. I saw a property with Barfoot & Thompson, requested a viewing at 13:54 received a phone call from Mel Hargood at 14:49 the same day, confirming my viewing date and time. Mel made the whole process seamless and painless. Mel replied straight away, and not just with an automated email, but with a phone call - which was appreciated. I lodged an application at the same time as requesting a viewing, Mel recalled the application and mentioned it at the viewing - again that was appreciated. Throughout the entire process Mel was prompt, thorough and professional, her communication has been second to none. If only Mel dealt with all the rental properties in Whangarei, more people would know what was going on, instead of just receiving automated emails and never receiving feedback from the agent.
